Parenting a Child With Autism

Has your child been diagnosed with autism? Dr. Clifford Seyler and our team at Royal Pediatrics/Tullahoma Pediatrics/Manchester Pediatrics – your pediatrician in Tullahoma, Manchester, and Fayetteville, TN – share some helpful tips below.

Tips for Raising a Child With Autism

Parents want their children to have happy, healthy lives – preferably free from as many struggles as possible. When their child receives a diagnosis of autism or another issue, it can feel like the end of the world – and an insurmountable challenge – but it’s not. In this guide, Dr. Seyler and the team at Royal Pediatrics/Tullahoma Pediatrics/Manchester Pediatrics – your pediatrician in Tullahoma, Manchester, and Fayetteville, TN – share some important tips to help.

Let Go of the Guilt

You did nothing wrong. Autism might not be completely understood at this point, but factors for it tend to weigh heavily on genetics and biology. It’s something a child is born with.

Know That Every Child is Different

Autism means that your child’s brain works differently than other people’s, but here’s a secret: everyone is different. Even if you have two neurotypical children, they’ll be unique in some way. There is nothing “wrong” with an autistic child – they are simply unique.

Keep It Consistent

Kids in general tend to thrive with routines, but it can be even more beneficial for those with autism. Though life can throw curveballs, do your best to keep your child’s schedule as consistent as possible.

Let Them Play

Every child wants to play, and they all benefit from it. Don’t be so structured or so focused on “helping” your child that they don’t get the opportunity to play and have free time to explore their interests.

Take Them With You

While it’s good for parents to get out of the house on their own sometimes, it’s a good idea to take your autistic child along with you for errands and everyday tasks. This exposure helps them become accustomed to the world, which can be very beneficial for those who aim to live more independently.

Seek Support

Raising a child with autism can be taxing in every way, but there are many resources available to lighten some of the load. Seek support groups, talk to your pediatrician, and ask for help from loved ones. Don’t be ashamed to take advantage of these resources, as they benefit both your child and your family.
