Getting Your Child's Sport Physical

Sports physicals are often required before a child can participate in organized athletic activities. Getting a physical is one of the best ways to ensure your child is healthy enough to safely participate in sports. They also make it possible to identify health conditions, such as asthma, that potentially could affect your child while playing sports. Dr. Clifford Seyler, the knowledgeable pediatrician at Royal Pediatrics in Fayetteville, Tullahoma, and Manchester, TN, provides physicals to ensure your child is ready to participate in sports.

Sports Physicals

Several things are checked during a sports physical. Your child’s medical history will be reviewed and current issues will be discussed, such as any allergies your child might have or medications being taken. If your child has recently experienced any unusual symptoms, such as dizziness or chest pain, those should be mentioned at this time. Children with existing conditions, such as asthma, can be properly diagnosed and prescribed the right treatment, such as a portable inhaler, that will allow them to more safely participate in sports.

A primary component of a sports physical is assessing overall physical health. In addition to taking your child’s height and weight measurements, blood pressure and temperature will also be checked. Other things that will be checked include pulse, reflexes, flexibility, vision, and hearing. The pediatrician will listen to the lungs, and examine the abdomen, spine, and ears, nose, and throat, as well. Additionally, vaccinations that are due can be administered while your child is in the office for the physical.

A sports physical is also a good time to discuss nutrition and dietary habits. The doctor can provide guidance and recommendations for eating a balanced diet to help your child maintain optimal health while participating in athletic activities. If a urinalysis test is required by your child’s athletic program, that can be completed as part of the sports physical, as well.

Sports Injury Prevention

A sometimes overlooked aspect of a physical exam for sports is that it can be an opportunity to discuss injury prevention. Some types of injuries are more common in certain sports. The skilled pediatrician at our office in Fayetteville can recommend specific stretches or exercises for increasing flexibility and building strength to avoid such injuries. Additionally, if your child sustained an injury previously, the doctor can make sure it has healed properly and discuss ways to strengthen the area and protect it against further injury.
